Alternative Energy Powers NY Fiber Mill

Dan Melamed and Sara Healy take special pride that all the fiber they process at their fiber mill is grown on the couple’s 200-acre Hudson Valley farm, where they raise 125 Angora goats and 110 Cormo sheep. They’re also pleased that they have made Buckwheat Bridge Angoras as sustainable as possible. “It was Dan’s idea,” Healy said of her husband. “But we both really believe there’s a big need for sustainability in agriculture and alternative energy in general. Anyone who’s not thinking in that direction really needs to think about it. “There’s really no way that the world can go forward the way it’s going now. I ask people who aren’t asking about it why they aren’t.” They purchased the farm 12 years ago. In 2005, the couple installed 84 solar panels which produce 10 kilowatts of electricity, and five years later, a 100-foot tall wind turbine to help power the mill.

Energy Independence now Goal for Farmers and Rural Homes

Gaia-Wind will tell the UK’s largest renewable industry gathering that the rise and rise of Utilities’ energy bills is fuelling a move towards powering rural homes and farms from their own resources. Speaking at Renewables UK 2012 in Glasgow, Gaia-Wind Sales Manager Kenneth Peterson will set out how while the current trend of energy price rises threatens to engulf UK consumers, “they aint seen nuthin yet!”

G-W CEO Reacts to Feed-In Tariff Reduction

Gaia-Wind CEO Johnnie Andringa today slammed the UK Government’s decision to slash feed in tariff rates for farm scale turbines. He said: “This decision could cost up to 3000 jobs. The simplistic tool of lumping the smaller, Farm Scale, wind turbines in with machines up to ten times as large will have a devastating effect on a sector which is delivering energy independence to thousands.” The full article can be found here http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-scotland-business-26064210

For Gaia-Wind customers this means they can be assured of receiving the Government’s environmental bonus: In addition to the market price, Gaia-Wind turbine owners will now get a feed in tariff premium of øre250/kWh (approx. 0.35 EUR/kWh). If they are a small business, they can also take advantage of a tax break of almost 30% on new capital purchases. ** *TP Services and Naturvarme-vest **Currently 28.75%: Valid till the end of current tax year.

It's an ill wind.............

The photovoltaic solar situation had already been settled and the new arrangements for other technologies, in our case farm scale wind, come as no surprise. That does not mean we at Gaia-Wind and our customers are happy with the process and we are making that clear to DECC. However, we understand that government support schemes are finite; and that reductions were coming has been clear for some time. One positive we can take from the situation is that we have clarity about the future.

RenewableUK warns PM to quash dangerous uncertainty spread by onshore wind rumours

RenewableUK warns PM to quash dangerous uncertainty spread by onshore wind rumours Commenting on continuing reports about the Conservative Party’s plans for onshore wind, RenewableUK's Deputy Chief Executive Maf Smith warned: “The Prime Minister needs to step in right now and put a stop to these deeply unhelpful leaks concerning the future direction of Conservative party policy on renewable energy. The suggestion that there should be any kind of moratorium on the development of onshore wind ignores the fact that it is the most cost-effective form of renewable energy available to us as consumers – we need it to drive energy bills down in the long-term. It also disregards the fact that two-thirds of the public consistently support the growth of onshore wind energy. The fact that these rumours are being allowed to continue about such a popular technology means that every energy and infrastructure investor in the country will be wondering “who’s next?” The message going out is that if a vocal minority complain about popular much needed infrastructure the Prime Minister is unwilling to defend it. That’s bad for investor confidence across the board.” “Nearly 19,000 people work in the British onshore wind industry – and that number is set to double over the next 10 years unless the Government blows it. Irresponsible, unattributed rumours like this play with all of their jobs. “Investors will be shaking their heads in disbelief as the Tory party wilfully damages confidence in one of Britain’s flagship new industries. Mr Cameron needs to act firmly and stop some of his MPs using wind energy as a football in their short-term playground politics.” (ends) For further information, please contact: • Jennifer Webber, Director of External Affairs, 020 7901 3012 or 07792 463445 Jennifer.Webber@RenewableUK.com • Robert Norris, Head of Communications, 020 7901 3013 or 07969 229913 Robert.Norris@RenewableUK.com Notes: 1. Scotland: Internationalism Key To The Future

Scotland must capitalise on its competitive advantages and explore the huge economic opportunities available in global markets, Cabinet Secretary for Finance, Employment and Sustainable Growth John Swinney said today. In his first major speech to Parliament since being re-elected, Mr Swinney said a priority area for sustainable economic growth would be the internationalisation of Scottish businesses and the re-industrialisation of Scotland.

Scots Firms are Growing Fast — Fast-Track 100

We may be in a period of low economic growth; but that doesn’t mean that some companies are bucking the trend. In fact, there’s long been an argument that the best time to set up a new business is in a recession. And from the evidence of this weekend’s Fast Track 100 from the Sunday Times, there are firms in Scotland that are performing very well indeed.

Wind of Change Blows Jobs to Glasgow

Wind planning decisions are being made more positively and more quickly

As the Renewables Industry gathers in Gaia-Wind’s home town of Glasgow, Scotland’s First Minister, Alex Salmond has announced a new target of half of Scotland's electricity demand to be met from renewable energy by 2015. We are just weeks away from an important UK energy bill so we need to be clear about where Renewables, and particularly the use of wind turbines as alternative energy sources stands.

Wind Power Is Here To Stay, Despite Manufacturing Slow Down

Offshore wind turbine manufacturers have been hit with a production freeze, but renewable energy experts predict this is more of a delay than a shutdown. One area not discussed by ministers in the past few weeks is the rise in smaller, domestic wind turbines being sold in the UK.
