Cumbrian dairy farmer Frank Mattinson has seen his electricity bill cut from £10,000 a year, to next to nothing, after installing a Gaia-Wind turbine on his land.
Frank, who runs the family farm near Wigton with his two sons, was a pioneer of farm-based wind power in the county. The Gaia-Wind turbine he installed in March 2010 has so far generated 43,000kWh of electricity in a below-average 5.1m/s wind speed.
Myriad CEG, the UK’s leading provider of on-site green renewable energy systems, installs similar systems on farms across the UK.
The electricity Frank’s 18-metre turbine generates is used to power the farm and surplus power is supplied to the national grid. Add the feed-in-tariff Frank receives and it covers his £10,000 annual electricity bill.
Frank, who farms 600-head of Pedigree Ayrshire dairy cattle on his 500-acre farm, says his only regret is that he installed just one turbine.
