Scottish Enterprise Minister talks about new small wind turbine plant
A WIND turbine production plant that will provide new jobs was opened in Glasgow.
The Scottish enterprise minister Jim Mather officially opened the Gaia-Wind plant at Port Dundas. The Gaia-Wind plant moved production from Denmark to Scotland and intends to provide 80 jobs and put about £5 million in the economy.
Managing director of Gaia-Wind Johnnie Andringa said he hoped the company would expand and provide further jobs in the future.
He said: “Wherever appropriate we look to source parts and services locally and around Scotland.
“If the business environment continues to be positive we could well create more than 80 jobs in our company and immediate service and supply chain. Within the next two years we expect jobs at local partners and suppliers (transport, electronics, steel fabrication, dealers and contractors) to exceed the in-house number of jobs.”
Jim Mather said he was impressed with Gaia-Wind’s ambitious growth plans and their commitment to using local suppliers.
He said: “Gaia-Wind’s decision to expand its Scottish presence and invest in this impressive new Glasgow facility is testament to the skills of the work force and the strength of our renewable sector.
“Single installation turbines are an important part of the diverse mix of energy sources and Gaia-Wind’s success helps fuel demand for small scale projects to allow people to power their homes, businesses and farms.”
The plant will produce a turbine specifically designed for moderate wind speeds and should offer a payback time of below five years.
